The fishing season in Southern South America including Argentina, Chile and Patagonia is from November through April. These are the spring and summer months of the southern hemisphere when the weather is warm and moderate, the sunlight is long and fish abound. Some of the common sport fishing species are varieties of trout including brown trout, rainbow trout and brook (river) trout.

Most species of true Trout are North American and Northern European native fish which were transplanted in the early 20th century by wealthy land owners from the United States. It is believed that most of the trout and salmon found in Argentina and Chile were brought from New York state in the USA around 1904. As success with the exotic fish became apparent more species were brought from the USA and Europe in the decades to follow.

The name Trout is common for a variety of species. The trout family is called Salmoninae which includes varieties of Salmon as the name implies. There are three major groups or genera (genus) which divide geographically. Salmo, which include Atlantic salmon, Brown Trout and Sea Trout are from the Atlantic side of the Western Hemisphere while Oncorhynchus are the Pacific varietals including the Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout. The third genus is Salvelinus (Char) and include Artic Char and Brook trout and are native to Northern Europe.

From 1933 on the practice of planting trout species in Argentina and Patagonia has continued under both government and private management. This ongoing development of these sport fish have help to make Argentina a prime spot for sport fishing and especially fly fishing for which these particular species are ideal. In the region the rainbow and brook trout can be quite large and the locations are described as breathtaking.

This particular first part of our fly fishing trip found an end as well as, unlike other adventures where it had been now time to visit home, we were simply getting into the next experience. Following a really short sleep-over within BA, we left early the following morning for Bariloche within Patagonia. Fishermen were treated for an excellent lunch (no, this wasn’t your own average excellent shore lunch) of the hot meal cooked with an open fire, excellent salads and wine/beer after which drifted the well-known Limay River. The very first thing you note may be the amazing clarity from the waters. In complete, many of all of us drifted the Limay twice but with small success. Although you can see the periodic large browns holding within the deeper waters, just one decent brown bass was caught through Bobby Doer. Otherwise, only really small or medium fish were caught. Eventually was spent drifting the actual Rio Manso that, unlike the Limay Water which drains towards the Atlantic system, the Manso drains towards the Pacific system and it is therefore more lush because of higher rainfall.

Fly Fishermen were treated for an excellent lunch (no, this wasn’t your own average excellent shore lunch) of the hot meal cooked with an open fire, excellent salads and wine/beer after which drifted the well-known Limay River. The very first thing you note may be the amazing clarity from the waters. In complete, many of all of us drifted the Limay twice but with small success. Although you can see the periodic large browns holding within the deeper waters, just one decent brown bass was caught by, the man, Bobby Doer. Otherwise, only really small or medium seafood were caught. Eventually was spent drifting the actual Rio Manso that, unlike the Limay Water which drains towards the Atlantic system, the Manso drains towards the Pacific system and it is therefore more lush because of higher rainfall. Once again, the fishing was down for the drift, however, the second drift the following day met with a lot more success. This was a fascinating water since it had been even clearer compared to Limay and all of us were sight throwing to fish which were swimming near the top in holes in which the bottom could end up being clearly seen 6+ metre distances deep. Accommodations were from Estancia Puema Hue about the shores of Lago Gutierrez and may only be referred to as stunning. Beautiful log buildings and out-cabins made this a location where you didn’t necessarily want in order to leave. As using the first venue, the spouses/guests had their very own programs and invested their days going to the quaint city of Bariloche, walking and riding. They were hosted and, in some instances, natural history or even flora/fauna experts supported the trekkers to provide maximum value towards the outing. Definitely no complaints were to become heard!

After the 3rd night on this fly fishing adventure, the group was bussed to the final destination, Quemquemtreu Working Ranch about the banks of the actual eponymous river. Although this facility wasn’t as ‘beautiful’ since the previous one, this can be a place where all of us left our hearts and plan to return. Aside in the excellent hospitality associated with managers Paula as well as Martin and their own aide, Pepi, the feel and homeliness of the ranch was outstanding. Meals were superb and had the very best atmosphere one might imagine. Fishermen spent 2 and half days about the nearby Rio Collon Cura as well as were treated in order to calm blue heavens. Where the Rios Limay as well as Manso were stingy within their fishing, the Collon Cura chose to make amends and provide generously. Basically, many of us caught between 10 to thirty medium rainbow trout each day along with the odd big dark brown trout. The highlights in our 2 days had been six to 7 pound browns captured by Chris Travis, Maddy Tacy as well as myself as this technique also has perch as much as five pounds that, when found within the slightly slower seas, are easily caught and constitute some good activity. Also, unlike another venue, we had a few decent dry fly fishing to some prolific small caddis hatch close to the end of your day. I thoroughly loved catching 15 in order to 18 inch rainbows in one or two feet of water about the dry fly.

Dorado travel fishing season has become open and the actual first fly fishing report from the season is really promising. We floated 3 veryproductive stretches from the Juramento River as well as waded the banking institutions of Dorado Water withexcellent results. We’d a strange season this past year with lots associated with rain (a thirty yr event) which changed the span of the river, altered banks as well as destroyed islands andbridges and also the fishing really didn’t start before last two days of December.

The place where a Wild on the actual Fly magazine located group caught as well as released many fish including an extremely strong 12. 3 kg Dorado captured by Stu Barry utilizing his unique Bouncer travel.

Fish seemed to become very productive along with small “machitos” or even little male Dorado as much as 10 lbs being probably the most active and large females on the point of spawn and really aggressive.

The tributaires tend to be crystal clear because of the lack of rain for that past 5 days and small Dorado (average 20″) are caught in most single pocket associated with water. Some large fish as much as 11 lbs had been also caught. It really is challenging to property a 10 pound bar of gold while using the a 5 or even 6 wt fishing rod on fast present! We have just fished the cosest stretch from the tributary to city and fishing had been superb, we are getting excited about taste what top of the stretches have to give you.

The sight associated with Toucans, Pecaris, Tapirs, storks, wild orchids and understanding that a Jaguar is hidden within the jungle high with this tributaries is genuinely amazing.
